The Employment Conversation

How should employers get the talent they need from social media?

CEA 2011 WinnerThe use of social media is no small phenomenon. Facebook has 550 million unique monthly visitors, Twitter has about 90 million unique visitors, and LinkedIn has about 50 million unique visitors, according to eBizMBA Rank for September 2010. The percentage of American Internet users visiting social-networking sites monthly increased by nearly half, from 40% in 2008 to 59% in 2010 and is projected to reach 69% by 2014.

With that type of potential audience, is social media a viable channel for recruiting activities? And if so, how should employers approach social media for employer branding, recruitment, and internal communications?

We sought the answer to those questions from both the general online population and HR professionals.

Transparency And Your Employer Brand

The information age has given birth to a cross-generational ethos in which every day more information becomes available instantly and at no charge. Facts, opinions, insights, opportunities are pouring forth in greater abundance every day. On a million different channels, millions of voices can be heard. This allows “discovery” in the marketplace of ideas.

Free, abundant information sets up an expectation regarding all information. Today we expect to find discoveries about every new venture, before we venture forth. Whether it’s a restaurant, a book, a health club plan, we can explore reality in a digital and instantaneous format. Click first.

But employees will not leave this new approach to their decision-making in the parking lot when they get to work. Transparency is fast becoming an expectation in the workplace. In fact, employees are not just acclimating to the concept of unfettered truth, they are demanding it as a condition of, take your pick, a) trust b) loyalty c) preference.
